Google's Threat Analysis Group is an in-house counterespionage unit committed to keeping sensitive online information safe from hackers and spies.
The Threat Analysis Group last year blocked an allegedly Iranian-supported disinformation campaign by taking out dozens of YouTube channels using fake accounts to promote misleading political stories.
The 27-person unit tracks more than 200 hacker organizations that threaten Google and its users, analyzing hacking methods and clues to the groups' identities to prevent attacks.
The Group leverages access to data across popular products like Gmail, with more than 1.5 billion accounts globally, and to the VirusTotal attack code database managed by another branch of Alphabet, Google's parent company.
The Threat Analysis Group issues about 4,000 warnings each month to Gmail users when it identifies government-backed hackers attempting to break into their accounts.
