Seattle mayor Jenny Durkan has launched a new paid internship program for college students, in partnership with area companies, including Amazon and Expedia.
Labor groups and local colleges will collaborate with employers on the Opportunity Promise pilot's development.
The pilot will supply internships for a select group of Seattle Promise scholars, with the eventual goal of making it available to all tuition assistance recipients.
Durkan said, "We know that our city of the future lies in the hands of our young people. It's critical that we not only provide access to free college, but we also build a pathway to the good-paying jobs of the future."
The Opportunity Promise pilot is scheduled to launch this summer. The founding partners intend to follow up by designing a broader program, with internships running for two consecutive summers that will later lead to apprenticeships.
