University of Washington researchers have developed a voice-controlled robot that can feed pieces of fruit to humans on command, as part of a project to assist people who cannot perform essential tasks.
The researchers trained the robot by asking people to feed a mannequin, then converted those actions into a set of rules.
The robot was engineered to receive commands from Amazon's Alexa, but the researchers said it could be integrated with other voice assistants as well.
The researchers learned from people and caregivers how to make a robot feed people the way a person would.
A future project goal is to make the robotic system capable of receiving non-vocal commands from people who cannot speak.
