Researchers found the Apple Watch could detect irregular pulse rates, which might indicate a need for further monitoring to catch atrial fibrillation (AF).

The finding comes from the largest U.S. AF screening and detection study, involving more than 400,000 Apple Watch users.

About 2,000 participants, or 0.5% of the study population, received irregular pulse alerts, and were sent an ECG electrocardiography (ECG) patch to wear for subsequent identification of AF episodes.

One-third of those whose watches found an irregular pulse were verified to have AF via ECG, and about 84% of the irregular pulse notifications were confirmed as AF episodes.

Stanford University's Marco Perez said, "The physician can use the information from the study, combine it with their assessment ... and then guide clinical decisions around what to do with an alert."
