Google researchers report that artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms can help eye doctors make more accurate diagnoses.

The findings of the Google research build on earlier work by the Google AI research group, which showed its algorithm performs nearly as well as human specialists in screening patients for diabetic retinopathy.

The research team developed a computer-assisted system to "explain" the algorithm's diagnosis, which improved both the ophthalmologists' diagnoses and its own diagnostic accuracy.

The researchers designed two forms of assistance to help physicians read algorithmic predictions, with the degree of improvement reliant on the physician's level of expertise.

Without assistance, general ophthalmologists were less accurate than the algorithm, and retina specialists were not substantially more accurate; with assistance, general ophthalmologists matched but did not surpass the model's accuracy, while retina specialists exceeded its performance.
