The design firm AKQA used artificial intelligence (AI) to design a new game, reportedly in only two months.

Speedgate combines elements of rugby, croquet, soccer, and Ultimate Frisbee, and is driven by collective cunning and strategy.

AKQA researchers fed information about 400 different sports into a neural network, and the AI generated new concepts and rules, based on only a few instructions.

The game had to be playable outdoors, easy to learn, and accessible to different kinds of athletes.

The researchers chose to test three potential concepts in person from the list of suggestions the AI produced, including a rejected concept involving exploding frisbees, eventually adding more specific rules to make Speedgate playable.
