Cybersecurity Jobs Abound. No Experience Required.

There are many U.S. cybersecurity job openings, and a shortfall of qualified professionals to fill them.

There are many U.S. cybersecurity job openings, and a shortfall of qualified professionals is prompting employers to look outside traditional pipelines to find candidates, often without the desired experience.

IBM and Palo Alto Networks, for example, are partnering with universities, training programs, and cybersecurity contests, investing millions of dollars to entice the right talent.

Most members of IBM's X-Force Red corporate-hacker test team lack cybersecurity degrees, because few collegiate programs offer them.

X-Force Red leader Charles Henderson said he often considers recruiting people versed in strategic videogames, whose gameplay would more likely demonstrate their problem-solving skills than their academic records.

Meanwhile, schools such as the Rochester Institute of Technology and State University of New York Polytechnic Institute recently debuted degree programs aimed at meeting demand for cybersecurity talent.
