Stanford University researchers have developed a computational tool that facilitates analysis of individual cell behavior in biomedical tissue samples.

The CIBERSORTx technique analyzes the cells' RNA as an upgrade from the CIBERSORT tool, which Stanford's Ash Alizadeh said could analyze a cellular mixture, and "tell how much of each kind of cell was in the original mix without having to physically sort them."

With CIBERSORTx, scientists could perform single-cell RNA analysis of a tissue sample, generating a "bar-code" RNA expression pattern that individualizes both the type of cell being studied and its operational subtype or mode.

Said Alizadeh, "Starting with a mix of RNA barcodes from a tumor can give us insights into the mix of cell types and their perturbed cell states in these tumors, and how we might be able to address these defects for cancer therapy."
