A new electronic platform from General Motors (GM) is envisioned as the linchpin of the automaker's future, enabling the function of almost all its cars' digital systems.

The platform is slated to enter production later this year, and will be extended to the bulk of GM's global line over the next four years.

GM's Al Adams said, "It's the brain and nervous system of the vehicle."

The new network has five times the bandwidth and computing power of GM's current digital vehicle architecture; a semiautonomous driving system and other active safety features will be incorporated in later models.

GM also plans to make over-the-air software updates available via the system.

The company says the extra processing power and smarter battery management provided by the new system will provide vehicles with improved onscreen resolution and greater mileage.
