Microsoft is calling on users to install a patch for a "wormable" vulnerability in Remote Desktop Services for Windows, which could be exploited to launch attacks similar to WannaCry.
The "BlueKeep" bug affects computers running Windows XP and later, including its server operating system; the bug lets hackers remotely run malicious code on susceptible computers, as well as spreading it to other systems on the same network.
Microsoft said it is "confident" there already is a BlueKeep exploit, which places nearly 1 million Internet-connected computers at risk.
Several security firms, among them McAfee and Check Point, have reportedly developed working proof-of-concept code that can set up a denial-of-service condition, at minimum.
