The Yaba neighborhood in Lagos, Nigeria, is a growing technology hub, hosting more than 60 startups, digital laboratories for First Bank of Nigeria and African lender subsidiary Stanbic IBTC, and the Yaba College of Technology.
Yaba's evolution was buttressed by a grassroots campaign that lobbied for government support, which helped incubate the MainOne company, which built Yaba's Internet infrastructure.
MainOne's Kazeem Oladepo said the tech hub's genesis was initiated "to demonstrate the power of people being connected and the socioeconomic impact that would have."
The adaptability of Lagos' businesses may be an advantage, as tech firms hope to capitalize on young people still not using the Internet in poorer regions.
