The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is launching at least two new research centers to support quantum information science, with the goal of improving national security, as well as the country's economic competitiveness and leadership in scientific discovery.
The centers are being developed in support of the National Quantum Initiative, which Congress enacted in December to accelerate advances in basic science and quantum-based technology. They will serve as the "flagship" of DOE efforts under the National Quantum Initiative Act, which calls for research centers and a $1.2 billion jumpstart over 10 years to facilitate quantum science.
