A new artificial intelligence (AI) system can detect unidentified or underidentified structural damage in major infrastructure such as nuclear reactors, skyscrapers, bridges, and dams.

Developed by researchers at Purdue University, the new system analyzes video frame by frame to detect any cracks; the AI algorithm tracks the cracks from one frame to the next.

The operator can review the specific frames of the video referenced by the system to examine the cracks and determine what action may be necessary.

Said Purdue researcher Mohammad R. Jahanshahi, "This is a giant leap for inspection technology and being able to reduce accidents, deaths and maintenance costs. It lets the computer do the hard work, and then provides a human operator with quantitative information about the crack, such as the thickness and the length of the crack."
