Wikipedia, one of the most successful online communities in history, struggles to attract and retain female editors.

Many female editors have their work contested, and some report feeling unsafe within the community.

Researchers at the University of Washington interviewed 25 well-established female Wikipedia editors and found that they have experienced a range of abuse, including trolling and doxxing, which involves exposing someone's personal information.

The participants also discussed how they managed their safety both conceptually and physically, and how they acted on this understanding to create safe spaces on and offline.

The researchers suggest  future online communities should focus on equity, inclusivity, and safety for historically marginalized users.
