Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory have developed a system that could give robots the ability to link multiple senses. The system involves a predictive artificial intelligence (AI) that can learn how to see by touching, and learn to feel by seeing.
The researchers used the system with a robot arm to help it anticipate where an object would be without sight of the object, and then recognize it based on touch. This kind of AI could also be used to help robots operate more efficiently and effectively in low-light environment without requiring advanced sensors, and as components of more general systems when used in combination with other sensory simulation technologies.
