Quantum Internet Emerging, One Experiment at a Time

Recent milestones in transmitting, storing, and manipulating quantum data have some physicists expecting the imminent creation of a proof-of-principle quantum network. Many experts envision a network employing standard optical fiber to link at least three far-flung quantum devices as the first step.

Last year, researchers at Switzerland's University of Geneva reported distributing secret keys via quantum key distribution across more than 400 kilometers (250 miles) of optical fiber at 6.5 kilobits per second. The next phase involves transferring quantum states directly between network nodes, and researchers at Austria's Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information reportedly sustained entanglement between matter and light over 50 kilometers (31 miles) of optical fiber.

Extending transmission distance to 100 kilometers (62 miles) is the team's next planned milestone, while the challenge ahead entails entangling quantum bits stored in different types of materials.
