Supermarket chains in Europe are testing cashierless stores with cameras that monitor items shoppers pick, with transactions recorded as they exit.

These deployments were prompted by Amazon Go stores in the U.S., which use similar technology.

U.K.-based Tesco hopes to publicly open a "pick and go" or "frictionless shopping" store using technology from Israeli startup Trigo Vision next year, with wider implementation in smaller outlets to follow.

Tesco's test store employs ceiling-mounted cameras to produce a three-dimensional perspective of products as they are removed from shelves. The system can detect shoppers as they roam the store, as well as identify a group of items when someone holding them stood before a screen, counting their total price.

French chain Carrefour also is testing systems in which cameras track what is taken off shelves, with shoppers charged automatically when they leave.
