Malware attacks against mobile devices, especially Android handsets, have ballooned this year, with hackers focusing on attacking smartphones for credential theft, surveillance, and malicious advertising, according to a study by Check Point Research.
The firm's researchers found attacks targeting smartphones and other mobile devices during the first half of 2019 were up 50% compared with the same period last year.
They said the growth trend can be attributed to the sharp rise in mobile banking applications. Cybercriminals have followed the money and increasingly distributed malware designed to steal payment data, login credentials, and funds.
Said Check Point's Maya Horowitz, "Users need to protect their devices with a holistic solution that blocks malware and network attacks, and prevents data leakage and credential theft, without affecting the user experience."
