Researchers at the University of Tokyo in Japan have developed a virus scanner for a smartphone that could help medical professionals track the spread of diseases.

The device is about the size of a brick, with a slot on top that connects to a smartphone so that its camera looks through a small lens to the inside of the device.

A custom smartphone app allows the user to see individual viruses, which are held in place on a clear surface in tiny cavities lit by an LED.

Said University of Tokyo researcher Yoshihiro Minagawa, "Diagnosis is a critical factor of disease prevention. Our device paves the way for better access to essential diagnostic tools."
