The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence and facial recognition technologies, combined with a dramatic decline in cost, means that these systems are now viable for use by supermarkets and other shops as a way to prevent theft.
A Budgens grocery store in Buckinghamshire, England, for example, is already using the technology and found that the number of items being stolen per week has fallen. While there are some privacy and political issues that need to be resolved, the discussion may be short-circuited if enough retailers start using the facial recognition technology before the government can act. "If someone triggers the alert, they're approached by a member of management and asked to leave, and most of the time they duly do," says Budgens manager Paul Wilks.
