Canada Shows the Way on Autonomous Vehicles
The University of Waterloo's Autonomoose, a revamped Lincoln MKZ hybrid, is fitted with eight cameras, radar scanners, sonar, lidar, vision sensors, and a sophisticated on-board computer with a self-driving code base.

Researchers at universities across Canada are helping the country prepare for the coming autonomous vehicle (AV) and electric vehicle (EV) revolution, while at the same time helping to raise Canada's profile as a global leader in AV and EV research.
For example, researchers at the University of Waterloo have developed Autonomoose, which became the first AV on public roads in Canada last August. Autonomoose is a revamped Lincoln MKZ hybrid fitted with cameras, radar scanners, sonar, LiDAR, and a sophisticated on-board computer equipped with self-driving code.
The Waterloo researchers are also studying passenger-vehicle interaction inside AVs. The researchers are using Autonomoose to understand the effects of different driving styles on the anxiety levels of passengers with the goal of reducing their stress.
