Wearable Motion Sensors Could Monitor Baby In Utero

Researchers at the Stevens Institute of Technology have developed a technique that could allow expectant parents to hear their baby's heartbeat continuously at home with a device that is potentially more accurate than conventional fetal heartbeat monitors.

The device uses the same commercial sensors used in smartphones to horizontally or vertically orient the device. The system records vibrations sent through the mother's abdomen when the baby's heart beats or when the fetus moves.

"Our device could let a pregnant woman know if her fetus is compromised and she needs to go to the doctor," says Stevens researcher Negar Tavassolian.
