The Roborace motorsport competition is a testbed for autonomous vehicle (AV) technology, as international teams pit driverless electric racing cars against each other.

Roborace's Bryn Balcombe said the contest serves as a venue for evaluating the sensors and cameras AVs depend on for the ultimate goal of learning whether driverless cars can eventually "perform at a level so you can't detect it's an [artificial intelligence]."

Balcombe said, "There's around 12 seconds left for the AI to find" in order to be able to compete with the best human drivers; he added, "six seconds we think is easily gained, and then you're starting to get into the unknowns."
