Crime Prevention Through Crime Prediction

Students in a Louisiana State University (LSU) computer science class developed Crimer, a crime-prediction software program.

The researchers collected crime data from the Internet and used it to build a national crime prediction map of the U.S.

The software uses a variety of machine learning algorithms for the extraction, transformation, loading, and predicting of crime reports.

The researchers supplemented the crime data with a variety of auxiliary data, including weather, terrain, and population, said LSU researcher Alexander "Lex" Adams.

In addition to providing crime-prediction data to the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office, Crimer helping the East Baton Rouge Police Department and District Attorney's Office fight the opioid epidemic using social media.
