U.S. Energy Department Is First Customer for World's Biggest Chip
Two U.S. Department of Energy national laboratories will be among the first organizations to install artificial intelligence-based computers made from the largest silicon chip ever built.

The U.S. Department of Energy's Argonne and Lawrence Livermore national laboratories will be among the first organizations to deploy artificial intelligence (AI) computers built from the largest-ever silicon chip.
Cerebras Systems' 46,225-square-millimeter WSE chip features 1.2 trillion transistors for accelerating neural network training.
Argonne's Rick Stevens said the AI chip "will allow us to invent and test more algorithms, to more rapidly explore ideas, and to more quickly identify opportunities for scientific progress."
Cerebras computers will be embedded within existing supercomputers at the labs, with the goal of helping Argonne and Lawrence Livermore realize exascale computing.
Argonne's effort involves bringing Aurora, a system capable of more than 1 quintillion calculations per second, online in 2021; Lawrence Livermore's El Capitan 1.5-exaflop supercomputer is scheduled to go live the following year.
