Microsoft, MasterCard, Hewlett Foundation Launch Institute to Investigate Cyberattacks
Microsoft, Mastercard, the Hewlett Foundation and other groups this week launched an independent institute aimed at investigating cyberattacks and assisting their victims.

Microsoft, MasterCard, the Hewlett Foundation, and other organizations have jointly announced the launch of an institute to probe cyberattacks and help their victims.
The CyberPeace Institute's mission will be to coordinate recovery initiatives following attacks, as well as promoting compliance with international cyberspace regulations and guidelines.
An Institute spokesperson said core funders like Microsoft, MasterCard, and Hewlett have each pledged up to $5 million.
Microsoft's Tom Burt said the institute aims to give cyberattack victims assistance similar to aid that nongovernmental organizations provide to victims of wars and natural catastrophes.
Institute CEO Stephane Duguin, who is director of the European Union's Internet Referral Unit, said, "We need concrete solutions to build resilience among vulnerable communities, shed light on the malicious activity of attackers, and inform responsible behavior in cyberspace."
