Vietnamese developer BRG Group and Japanese trading company Sumitomo have announced plans to build a $4.21-billion smart-city development on the outskirts of Hanoi, to begin next year with construction of approximately 7,000 apartments and residences.

The partners will develop about 270 hectares (around 667 acres, or roughly 1 square mile), to eventually include high-rise apartments, office buildings, commercial facilities, and a rail station.

BRG and Sumitomo will deploy Internet-of-Things technology to save energy.

The development also will incorporate cutting-edge surveillance cameras using facial recognition and artificial intelligence.

Sumitomo president Masayuki Hyodo said, "City planning is an effort without a fixed goal. We will create a city that suits Vietnam."
