The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is expanding its use of artificial intelligence (AI) to handle a steadily increasing number of patent applications, including an influx of AI-related filings.
The agency is currently looking for an AI expert who will advise on state-of-the-art implementations of smart tools in its internal business units, while creating guidelines for using AI to drive efficiencies in both the patent and trademark process.
The overall goal is to speed up the process, in part by automating aspects of the research performed by staff examiners and supervisors.
The agency received about 3,800 AI-related patent applications in 2018, up from about 3,200 in 2017 and 1,900 in 2014.
Said USPTO director Andrei Iancu,“Our need is high and technology has advanced, so this is a good time to take advantage of these new tools to help our examiners.”
