European Cloud Project Draws Backlash From U.S. Tech Giants
Germany and France are launching a government-backed project to develop European cloud infrastructure.

Germany and France are launching a government-backed project called Gaia-X to develop European cloud infrastructure in order to help local providers compete with U.S. technology companies, which currently dominate the global cloud market.
Amazon and Microsoft criticized the initiative, saying the project will restrict data services along national borders.
European politicians and corporate executives are concerned about depending on U.S. tech giants that must comply with the U.S. Cloud Act, a 2018 law that requires U.S. companies to provide law enforcement with customers' personal data on request, even when the servers containing the information are abroad.
The Gaia-X project also aims to help European companies in industries such as manufacturing and healthcare in their efforts to develop algorithms and artificial intelligence without relying on foreign technology providers.
