With Face Scans, Automated Marking, Singapore Carves AI Niche

Singapore has unveiled an effort to become a global leader in artificial intelligence (AI) by 2030, with deputy prime minister Heng Swee Keat outlining five key areas the country is targeting for AI applications: transportation and logistics planning, provision of municipal services, detection and management of chronic diseases, personalized education, and border control.
The country plans to automate immigration clearance for all travelers—including implementing fingerprint, iris, and facial scanning—by 2025.
In education, the plan calls for students' English-language assignments to be graded automatically by 2022, with more subjects added by 2030.
In order to compete with AI superpowers such as the U.S. and China, Singapore wants to target specific AI applications for development and deployment at scale in specific industries.
The country is investing S$500 million (US$368 million) on AI research through 2020, and it has attracted U.S. and Chinese companies with policies that support AI research.
