Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) have developed an open-source, fully integrated program that combines the functioning of Microsoft Word with other things that one might need when writing scientific research papers, such as the data, code, and the bibliography.
There are pre-formatted places in the program for those other things, ready for input.
The over-arching goal of the SCIMAX program is to make report writing easier and to increase the level of integrity of scientific research by increasing replicability.
Said CMU's John Kitchin, the creator of SCIMAX, "Most people write their papers in Word, which is not a good scientific publishing environment. For example, Word has no way to log your data as you go or record exactly how it was analyzed."
