Scientists at the University of Bristol and the Technical University of Denmark have developed chip-scale devices that are able to harness the applications of quantum physics by generating and manipulating single light particles within programmable nanoscale circuits.
The chips can encode quantum information in light generated inside the circuits and can process the 'quantum information' with high efficiency and low noise, potentially enabling a significant boost in the ability to develop more complex quantum circuits needed in quantum computing and communications.
The researchers' demonstration of chip-to-chip quantum data teleportation enabled photons on either chip to share a single quantum state. Each chip was then programmed to execute tasks that employed quantum entanglement.
The team describes their work and a range of quantum demonstrations in "Chip-to-Chip Quantum Teleportation and Multi-Photon Entanglement in Silicon," published in the journal Nature Physics.
