Researchers at the University of California, Riverside have developed an open source computer program that can advise users to prevent the mixture of incompatible chemicals, which can result in fires, explosions, and injuries.
The ChemStor program relies on a form of graph coloring register allocation, a strategy for allocating resources for efficient processor use.
ChemStor accesses an Environmental Protection Agency library of 9,800 chemicals, organized into reactivity groups.
The program builds a chemical interaction graph for chemicals to be mixed to determine whether they can be safely combined; it also will indicate if no safe storage or disposal configuration can be found.
