Startup Higharc iteratively creates customized three-dimensional (3D) home designs via algorithmic modeling, which continuously fine-tunes critical elements that normally require hours of manual labor.

Unrelated startup Finch 3D also hopes to enhance building design with automation, and co-founder Pamela Wallgren believes such innovations will help architects make more informed design decisions.

Finch 3D's software automates repetitive tasks and directs architects through the design process using models and artificial intelligence (AI), allowing professionals to devote more time to creation and simplifying design evaluation.

Opportunities exist for architects to partner with developers on improving suburban development via AI and automation.

Dale Sinclair at the Aecom engineering group said architectural skills are still critical for visualizing design concepts, and deciding whether the models align with the real world.
