Laszlo Forro and colleagues at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne (EPFL) have created a new hard drive proof of concept establishing a platform for hard drives that are smaller, faster, and more affordable and energy-efficient.

The researchers described the design as a viable substitute for heat-assisted magnetic recording technology, which heats disk material during the writing process.

The experimental technique could lead to the development of a new generation of magneto-optical hard drives.
