University of Arizona (UA) researchers, in collaboration with engineers from General Dynamics Mission Systems, combined two techniques—radio frequency (RF) photonics sensing and quantum metrology—to give sensor networks a never-before-achieved level of precision.

The work involves transferring information from electrons to photons, then using quantum entanglement to increase the photons' sensing capabilities.

The team used an electro-optical transducer to convert RF waves into the optical domain, and then relied on quantum metrology to help entangled particles break past the standard quantum limit and take ultrasensitive measurements.

Said UA's Zheshen Zhang, "Entanglement allows sensors to more precisely extract features from the parameters being sensed, allowing for better performance in machine learning tasks such as sensor data classification and principal component analysis."
