Twitter says it will provide researchers and software developers access to a real-time dataset of daily public tweets about COVID-19, in order to study the virus' spread or track misinformation.
This data also could be accessed by approved applicants working on crisis management, emergency response, or communication within communities, and by developers of machine learning and data tools to help scientists understand COVID-19.
Researchers will be able to access tweets generated from the moment they connect to the dataset, although Twitter will not supply historical data.
The company said applicants must meet certain requirements, including that their use-case supports "the public good."
Applicants also must explain how they will shield the privacy and safety of people represented in the data, and comply with Twitter's rules on projects analyzing health-related topics by not deriving or inferring information about a user's health, or storing personal data.
