Chief information officers (CIOs) predict manufacturers will spend more on data management and analytics tools following the coronavirus pandemic, and will use those tools to gain deeper insights into operations, sales, and supply-chain disruptions.
Aluminum manufacturer Norsk Hydro CIO Jo De Vliegher said the Norwegian firm is building its data capabilities to improve remote monitoring of plant equipment deployed during the outbreak, to unlock value hidden in that data.
Meanwhile, information technology research firm ABI Research anticipates manufacturers' investments through 2026 will concentrate on software licenses, cloud services, connectivity, and professional services targeting data and analytics. Factories will use advanced data tools to understand operations and equipment performance more clearly, in order to accelerate production, decrease waste, improve product quality, and avoid downtime.
ABI said factories also will be able to identify and compile datasets to feed into artificial intelligence software to predict production and supply-chain interruptions.
