Soccer clubs are turning to technology as the English Premier League looks to restart while complying with numerous health and safety protocols.
Newcastle United is one of more than 50 sports teams worldwide using sports technology company Catapult Sports' Proximity Report.
If a player tests positive for Covid-19, these reports will inform the club which players he has been in contact with, for how long, and during which specific training drill or exercise.
Catapult's Will Lopes said the tool allows teams to upload their planned training schedules to determine how long players will be in close proximity with teammates and then tailor their plans to minimize contact volume between players.
It also can be used to ensure clubs are complying with pre-agreed guidelines for physical distance.
Prior to the pandemic, clubs already were using wearable heart monitoring and GPS tracking as part of their training kits.
