How the Pandemic Impacts U.S. Electricity Usage
Researchers at Texas A&M University and Tsinghua University in Beijing are studying how the coronavirus pandemic has changed U.S. electricity consumption. The researchers found that mobility in the retail sector is a significant factor in reducing electricity consumption across all major U.S. regional markets.
The research relies on such data sources as NASA's "Black Marble" satellite, regional transmission organizations, weather patterns, COVID-19 cases, and anonymized GPS locations of cellphone users.
They describe their work in a paper published online.
"Before when people study electricity, they look at data on the electricity domain, perhaps the weather, maybe the economy, but you would have never thought about things like your cell phone data or mobility data or the public health data from COVID-19 cases," says Le Xie of Texas A&M. "These are traditionally totally unrelated data sets, but in these very special circumstances they all suddenly became very relevant."
