A team of neuroscientists from the Neural Interfaces Lab at Bar-Ilan University's Gonda (Goldschmied) Multidiciplinary Brain Research Center in Israel won The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research and Sage Bionetworks BEAT-PD (Biomarker and Endpoint Assessment to Track Parkinson's Disease) DREAM Challenge.

The challenge focused on the use of kinematic data from smartwatches and smartphones during normal everyday behavior to predict a patient's subjective assessment of their symptoms.

The Bar-Ilan team was among three that applied signal processing methods to smartwatch and smartphone sensor data and used the results in machine learning models that allowed for patient-specific characteristics.

The other winners were from Harvard Medical School, the University of Rochester Medical Center, and the University of Michigan. The winners will share a $25,000 prize.
