Researchers at Imperial College London in the U.K. proposed a multimodal mixed reality visualization platform for the Microsoft HoloLens, designed to assist surgeons during surgical procedures.

The platform incorporates a three-dimensional organ model, volumetric data, and tissue morphology recorded with intraoperative imaging modalities.

Also included are novel interactive functionalities, such as scrolling through volumetric data and adjustment of virtual objects' transparency.

A pilot study confirmed the platform's potential and usability in the operating theater, with surgeons invited to engage with the visualization components and test the various functionalities.

Most participants appreciated the tool's intuitiveness, and said they would use it for intraoperative surgical guidance.
