Kobold Metals, a startup backed by Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, and other tycoons, aims to search for cobalt near a nickel mine owned by Glencore in northern Quebec using data analytics.
The startup wants to build a "Google Maps for the Earth's crust," with the goal of finding cobalt and other metals crucial to electric vehicles.
Said Kobold's Kurt House, "The subtleties in the geophysical signals are really only evident when you have all of the data and can evaluate it in a systematic, statistically rigorous way. It's just too much for the human brain to handle."
Kobold could begin collecting geophysical data in three to six months, and commence drilling in a couple of years.
