Autonomous Vehicles to Race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway

Over three dozen universities worldwide will compete in the Indy Autonomous Challenge, a race between self-driving vehicles to be held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in October 2021.
In the head-to-head, 20-lap race, teams must cross the finish line in under 25 minutes, with the ultimate goal of advancing autonomous vehicle technology.
The teams will create the artificial intelligence (AI) systems that enable high-speed driverless racing using a modified Dallara Automobili IL-15 racer; Clemson University will help integrate AI software and hardware into vehicles.
The teams will participate in a virtual version of the race next February, using technology from engineering simulation specialist Ansys to test their algorithms, and to generate data to improve algorithmic training for the actual event.
The University of Virginia's Madhur Behl said, "Racing is ... the stress test for AI, for autonomous vehicles."
