The U.K.'s British Computer Society (BCS), Royal Statistical Society, and Royal Academy of Engineering have joined forces to develop industry-wide professional standards in data science.
The goal of the standards is to uphold ethical use of the public's data, with the evwentual result of making data scientists trusted professionals.
The World Economic Forum forecasts that by 2025, 463 exabytes of data will be created worldwide on a daily basis, which underscores the importance of public awareness of where information is coming from, how it is used, where it goes, and whether the technologies using this data are aligned with public interest.
Said BCS's Rebecca George, "This is the hidden critical infrastructure of our world. We ought to be asking whether the people who are designing, building, and maintaining it are professionally qualified to do the job, and how they can prove it."
