The Trump administration has released a proposal calling for a 30% increase in spending in the 2021 nondefense budget for artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum information science.
The proposal calls for funding for the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and other agencies to develop AI research institutes.
In addition, it would give the U.S. Department of Energy $25 million in funding to build an early-stage quantum Internet.
The FY 2021 budget proposal increases funding from $1.12 billion in 2020 to $1.5 billion for AI, and from $579 million to $699 million for quantum information science.
A report from the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy indicates the administration is on track to meet its commitment to double nondefense research and development spending on AI and quantum information science between 2020 and 2022.
