Walmart said it has partnered with end-to-end drone delivery company Flytrex to roll out an on-demand drone delivery pilot program in Fayetteville, NC.

The retailer plans to use Flytrex's automated drones to deliver certain grocery and household essential items from Walmart stores.

Said Walmart's Tom Ward, "The drones, which are controlled over the cloud using a smart and easy control dashboard, will help us gain valuable insight into the customer and associate experience – from picking and packing to takeoff and delivery."

However, he said it would take time before millions of packages are delivered via drone.

The announcement follows the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration's late-August approval of Amazon's Prime Air service, which will use small drones equipped with "sense and avoid" technology to deliver packages weighing up to five pounds in 30 minutes or less.
