Digital Identity Checks to Be Expanded Under A$800M Technology Budget Package
The government of Australia plans to broaden the use of digital identity checks.

Australia's government will broaden the use of digital identity checks when businesses and individuals access services online, through an A$800 million (US$565 million) package in the forthcoming budget to boost adoption of new technologies.
The allocation to expand the digital ID program's rollout will amount to A$257 million (US$183 million), which is promoted as a way of streamlining and lowering the cost of interacting with government. The expanded funding will include face verification capabilities and finalize the plan's integration with the MyGov website. The government also intends to draft legislation to expand this system's use in the private sector, although it will be opt-in, in order to assuage privacy concerns. Australia's Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said allowing businesses to adopt digital technologies would boost the country's economic competitiveness and help its recovery from Covid-19.
