AI Is About to Face a Major Test: Can It Differentiate Covid-19 From Flu?

Developers of artificial intelligence tools are about to face their biggest test of the pandemic: can they help doctors differentiate between the coronavirus and the flu, and accurately predict which patients will become severely ill?

Researchers are turning to artificial intelligence (AI) to help doctors differentiate between Covid-19 and the flu and predict which patients likely will need intensive care beds, ventilators, and other equipment that could be in high demand during a Covid-flu "twindemic."

Said the University of Michigan's Karandeep Singh, "Imaging-based products are going to have a harder time spreading and being implemented without either integration into the electronic health record or some company licensing the technology out to universities directly."

Dascena, a company based in the San Francisco Bay Area, recently received emergency use authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for a tool that uses AI to analyze electronic health records and flag high-risk patients likely to need intubation.

Meanwhile, hospitals are building their own systems to predict mortality risk and identify patients in need of careful management post-discharge.
