Corporate boards could soon be looking for technology talent amid a shortfall, with digital business models gaining due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Companies have moved forward with investments in artificial intelligence-enabled analysis of business data, automation, and digital collaboration, in order to ensure business continuity.

Enterprise technology leaders and industry analysts say this transition hinges on an entrenched digital strategy and effective tech leadership, which boards are under enormous pressure to deploy quickly.

Martha Heller at tech recruiting firm Heller Search Associates cites historically low numbers of chief information officers (CIOs) and other information technology (IT) executives on boards, which may have declined further during the pandemic due to CEOs' reluctance to loan CIOs to other boards.

The results of a survey by IT recruiting and outsourcing firm Harvey Nash and KPMG International found 10% of companies lack board-level tech executives.
